The Mask

Assignment from one of my comics classes: create a comic about an object (in this case, a mask) but reveal that the object isn't actually what we first perceive it to be. Just go with me on this.

Adult Themes

A musical just closed at the Illusion Theater about sex and cocaine abuse. A half hour into a show, an elderly gentleman exited the theater with a six year old girl and demanded to know where it said that this show contained adult themes. First of all, this show opens with a guy snorting cocaine at a funeral. The amount these two were exposed to before walking out is staggering. Then he asks where it says the show contains adult themes. I directed him to a postcard for the show, where it said that this show did indeed contain adult themes. That wasn't good enough for him. He wanted to know where in the program it had that warning. I pointed out the plot synopsis contained numerous references to sex and drugs. It ended with him telling me that he wasn't angry and took the little girl back into the theater to see the rest of the show.

Spider-Man

I used to do everything possible to avoid drawing hands and shied away from full body shots.

Final Version

I hated the giant face on the last one and I liked the blank screen, it was lacking something. So now I have a shadow, which is closer to my original idea. I still may need to do something.

Floppy Girl

My take on girls that insist on listening to vinyl who play video games.

"I only play floppy."

more stuff

A quick doodle of Nancy Carlson after a few hours of looking through original manuscripts of children's books at the U of M. If only I could remember the name of our tour guide...

Et al

Proof that the boy is working.

Palm Pilot

I like the simplicity of this one.

Illustration Project. I'm always amazed how much time I waste on tiny details after I have completed a project. This one was supposed to go along with an article about the growing number of soldiers returning from Iraq with brain damage. One part of the article focused on how some people were given palm pilots in an attempt to cope with their inability to remember necessary things.

Hot Sauce

Project for Illustration - Design a label for a bottle of hot sauce. We had to find images that conveyed heat without using images like fire.
